Juneteenth

Juneteenth, why is this a significant date? In theory the slaves were freed by way of the ratification 13th amendment by Georgia on December 6, 1865. Yet this elusive status freedom didn’t come directly, rather it came indirectly by way of Union Troops, escaped slaves and the civil war itself. While the slaves were free the prior owners were not openly willing to share this information. Texas the last unoccupied confederate state freed the slaves on June 19, 1865. This freedom only came after Federal troops landed in Galveston Texas on June 18, 1865.
